Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) was an Ottoman army officer who won fame defending Gallipoli in 1915 and led the Turkish War of Independence from 1919 to 1922. In 1923 he founded the Republic of Turkey and became its first president, ruling through the single Republican People's Party until his death. He abolished the caliphate, replaced Islamic law with European-style codes, introduced the Latin alphabet and gave women the vote. Supporters credit him with building a modern, secular nation from the ruins of an empire; critics point to one-party rule and the suppression of Kurdish and religious opposition.
